Is Wanda Sykes Exasperated Again?
The other day I was watching a TV and I saw something I had never seen before. Typically, apple’s are the core of the message; an apple a day… Now, it is the apple that is giving the message, which is definitely new to me. This message: Eat At Applebee’s.
Fine.
My problem - besides the whole concept for the campaign - is that this message is being shrilly force fed into America by Wanda Sykes. If you do not know Wanda Sykes, here’s all you need to know, Wanda is an actress/comedian (and i use those words loosely) who is so tired of all the same crap and the same stupid people and the same silly circumstances day in and day out. Boy do those things just get her blood boiling. Back of hand to forehead, she cannot believe all that is going on around her and lets anybody around her know how she is really feeling in EVERY ROLE she has ever acted in! She does the same freaking thing every time. Why do people still hire her?
Seriously, this woman irritates me to the core of my soul. What Keanu Reeves is to restraint and unintentional poker faces, Wanda is to semi-endearing expressions of day-to-day frustration in a safe Jay Leno sort of way.
She is that “Oh she’s so crazy” comedian that stomps her feet and says the darnedest thing… I swear to God that Carlos Mencia has more charm than her. Well, okay, they both suck.
Now, the wry corporate thinkers at McCann have taken a blase idea and added the most unprovocative comedian to give voice to their campaign. I have worked hard to avoid her movies - somehow she found a way into Clerk’s 2, fuck you for that Kevin Smith - but she sneaks up on you in this commercial campaign like a wet-willy ninja, ever ready to irritate with all her ability.
Please Wanda, hurry up and make your millions and find God so you can quit this business and go on some evangelical broadcast channel so you can start telling us how to live instead of what we should eat… wait, what’s the difference?
And Applebee’s, GO AWAY!

remember when comedy central gave her a show? i don’t get it, do response groups give good reactions to her or something? she bugs the hell out of me too
or even worse, when they hired her to work on the HBO football show… dear lord, she made Dennis Miller seem reasonable and understated….
Maybe I’m missing something here…but I’m finding it hard to differentiate this blog from Wanda Sykes’ ranting.
sure, maybe brevity and restraint would have made a more powerful powerful message, but i’ll give her one thing, she always looks like she is having a goodtime and i want in on the fun
Huh? I love Wanda! Seriously, I’m a huge fan of her AND her humor, and her style. Loved her on CCentral’s Stand Up Stand Up, and even on CURB with Larry David.
I’ll eat @ Applebee’s just b/c of her. (IF I can find one here in L.A.)

What I find remarkable is that one 5′ 2" woman can stir up so much activity via a bouncy apple! Okay, so you say you can’t stand her voice or comedy yet she has managed to stir you so much to the core, you spend your valuable time blogging about it. Weather or not you like her voice the commercial is working because you are all writing about it. BTW, Wanda is quite the accomplished (4 time emmy winning) writer, producer, comedian and yes actress. Her stand up shows always sell out…not the 30 seat comedy clubs, 1000 seat theaters! And regarding Clerks…Kevin asked her personally, that’s how she "found a way into" that film Joshua. Have you ever gotten a call from Kevin Smith for a cameo?
eh, the argument that success equates to talent… hmmm, to respond or not to respond… that is a tough one considering that never in our pop-history has a talentless celebrity had legions of rabid fans…
(and this is not to say that she has not worked hard to get where she is at - see, a concession… jesus not everything is a stark truism)
and as for Clerks two? no my agent suggested i pass on that one as i was too busy sitting in my rundown apartment passive aggressively bashing a celebrity who, despite my ill favor of her routines, continues to make millions while i engage well intentioned uber-fans since this is a much more lucrative career choice… and it brings infinitely more job satisfaction…

wow!!! your background here should be GREEN with envy Joshua. Sounds to me like you’re just upset with your own failures.. It’s really sad that you have to sink to such a low. Hope you work out your problems and stop hating the success of others. However, I really don’t care for Applebee’s the food and service really is nothing to get excited about.
I guess self-depricating irony and sarcasm are hard to express in posts… oh, do i hate pandering… but i suppose these days if you express an opinion about someone so ingratiated in pop-culture, his or her fans will make it personal… although i noticed no one has stuck up for Keanu despite making fun of him too… although, i would imagine that multi-millionaires really don’t need people to rush to their defense, although i am sure they appreciate it… and did nobody question why i would have an agent and yet be a lowly apartment dweller who only made his living by blogging…? i guess these subtleties escape most people…
but, this is my last response to this comment, and although i do love a good verbal spar, i have lost too many IQ points here… however, until next time folks… keep up the arguments that having nothing to do with the crux of my post… now off to my celebrity-laden party where i will discuss the merits of rehab in hollywood starlets and mock people to their faces.
