Only in Europe…

Filed under: Ads We Like, Design, Reviews, State of the Industry, Viral Video — by Ryan at 3:25 pm on Wednesday, October 24, 2007

Things are just more laid back in Europe - in almost every aspect of life. The French would say we take ourselves too seriously, and they could point to the FCC’s Standards of Decency to prove their point.

Marketers and Advertisers there are allowed to be creative with their campaigns while sticking true to their original visions.

Take for example this advertisement for AIDS awareness.

Sidaction, the organization that produced this spot, would never be allowed to get away with something like that on anything less than premium cable here in America.

Moving, provocative and quick to get your attention, this is a brilliant campaign.

In my opinion, this is very interesting and innovative. Before the whole timer scene even slid in, I thought the ad already made its point. And you’re right. This kind of thing can only be found in Europe. No way will it be allowed in the States. This reminds me of the recent ad campaign that had Alicia Silverstone swimming in the pool. Since there was flesh involved (much less than this on), it was banned in several areas.

Visually breathtaking, from the beginning, and then it really takes away your breath when the first body drops. Very well executed. The US is still a puritanical society, ruled by morals it doesn’t even really believe anymore with the exception of a small part of the population. The problem is that that small group is very vocal and votes and spreads money around to advance its agenda/s.  Advertising here will never catch up until we move past the whole snickering and woeful shock any time a "booby" shows up.

There is a difference between showing nipples for the sake of showing nipples and using provocative imagery to get your point across. I hate that we’re limited in what we can and cannot show because we’re always so damn offended by something we’ve all seen a million times before.Tim, you’re exactly right. I wish you weren’t, but you are.

The amusing thing is this campaign got heavily censored - not flagged. purely deleted - on Youtube (and brothers) as being "too explicit".
