Sure, Sure… I Can Act Like a Moron

Filed under: Archived Posts — by Jaynie.K at 3:20 pm on Thursday, July 20, 2006
Determined to find the Big Key to an effective viral campaign (okay, yes, I played Zelda), I’ve been suffocating myself with YouTube for months now, trying to perform some sort of regressive, socioanalytic, Freudian, popculturified brainwash of my waking senses, so that I may rouse one morning to a vision of pure viral bliss, filled with Honda Crabs and William Hung and small dancing puppets that look eerily like Steve Jurvetson. Okay, so I don’t think it’s worked yet… Though I have been visited by a goodly share of puppets. Nonetheless, I’ve taken an amateur stab at being an amateur YouTuber. Indeed, the quality is shoddy, the lighting is horrific, and the “actors” (including yours truly) are, um, decidedly novice. But isn’t what this is all about? Authenticity and resonance… and acting like nonfabulous fools? And, while I’m all up in YouTube’s grill, I’ll take a moment to say a big “saywha?” to their revised Terms and Conditions page, as reported today on BoingBoing. Current count of questions raised: 8,655,994.

LOL, that’s cute, but I totally missed the point of the PSA.

Joan here’s my advice: Show people using Wiffiti. Like have a buncha people be in a coffehouse. A girl is sitting there reading whats coming up on the Wiffiti screen(but don’t show the screen)….and then like have her….

1 - Read that ‘Who’s that Corey’s (her boyfriend) kissing in the corner?’, and she looks over to see her bf kissing a girl, she cusses him out, leaves all pissed. Then show the text on the Wiffiti screen, then the guy that texted it to Wiffifi, and he says ‘Blame it on Wiffiti!’

2 - Read that ‘The guy in the baseball cap thinks your cute’, and then she turns to see a cute guy in a baseball cap, they start talking. Then show the text on the Wiffiti screen, then show the guy that texted it to Wiffiti, and he says ‘It was love at first Wiffiti!’, or something equally corny.

The idea is, have something happen that gets the viewer’s attention, but also leaves them wanting to find out what the hell Wiffiti is. Then at the end of each video, have Joan say ‘What/How will you Wiffiti?’.

Thanks Mack–

I debated scripting something out like you suggested, but then opted to string together the outtakes instead. I’ll take a stab at a more formal campaign for this next round. Thanks for the advice!
